About the WGA Notification
Windows Genuine Advantage is an anti-piracy program created by Microsoft in 2005, which enforces the online
validation of some of Microsoft's products (Windows Operating SystemS and Microsoft Office mainly). It is
automatically installed if Windows 'Automatic Updates' are enabled (You can disable this, which we recommend,
as often this causes perfectly stable syStems to sometimes crash). This program also notifies you if a copy of
Windows is not genuine. If you installed Windows updates from Microsoft's website and your Windows copy is not
genuine, you will be reminded via a message which permanently resides near your computer's taskbar to purchase
an original copy of windows. This message can be removed by manually editing the registry (Step-by-step
instructions are available as a download for just £1.00), this is a fairly simple process and can be done by
anyone with even a basic knowledge of Windows.
WGA can (and indeed does), affect legal copies of Windows too (Often after changing a piece of hardware like
the Hard Drive for example), the information this tool collects, is the main reason why this happens (See
below), however if Microsoft made Windows Operating Systems more affordable, then this issue would largely
vanish.
What data does the WGA collect?
This tool, if installed, collects the following data from the system.
BIOS checksum.
MAC address.
GUID
Hard drive serial number.
Computer make and model
Windows XP product ID.
PC BIOS information (make, version, date).
PC manufacturer.
User locale setting.
Region and language settings of the operating system.
Operating system version.
Validation and installation results.
Windows or Office product key.

Alternatives to Windows Operating Systems
Affordable (Or FREE!), alternatives to Windows Operating Systems etc., are many and include all the various
versions of LINUX which is an Open Source platform and is also Free (As indeed is all the software like Open
Office). You can also choose to pay a modest amount for a version with telephone support to get you up and
running (We recomend this for anyone new to LINUX). All versions usually come with additional software (or
available as a free download), too many to list here. Remember, after you've paid for your Windows operating
system many of the other items of software you may need  e.g. An office programme, are extra (and often cost
more than the complete PC System or laptop you just purchased!), which is the main reason that piracy
flourishes.
We like Ubuntu Linux for beginners and variants of the Debian Linux (Google these for more information),
whatever you choose there's no reason why you can't get yourself genuine versions of everything you need for
FREE or at very low or reasonable cost. Security issues aside, a genuine operating system is the heart of your
system and for that reason alone it's better to have a reliable system you can count on.
